Project Info
If we know what Black music sounds like, what does Black space feel like? Anchored by the personal archive of multi-hyphenate artist Geoffrey Holder, the IBI Oculus site subverts the retail landscape by taking a space typically designed to extract, and creates a place with the intention to deposit. Space 001 at the Oculus is a multipurpose reference library, exhibition space and podcast studio, designed to bring Black Imagination into space and time. A galaxy of Black Imagination, the entire site highlights design from across the diaspora. Concrete speakers designed by architect David Adjaye. Furniture by Lagos-based designer Nifemi Marcus-Bello . A rapid-liquid 3-D printed light fixture by Schendy Kernizan of MIT. Designed to undulate between public and private use, the space modular and adaptable, from the display items to seating. The visitor enters the space and walks around the perimeter with the bookshelves and curtains on both sides. Why The Oculus? Well, it’s the most accessible location to all of New York City’s historic Black neighborhoods (Harlem, Newark, Brooklyn).
