Harlem fashion icon Lana Turner and I were introduced a few years ago at Abyssinian Baptist Church when I was looking for few hats to shoot for a fashion story while I was still in grad school. Upon meeting and chatting with her, I realized quite quickly that it was actually she who needed to be photographed, in her wardrobe, and in her hats… of which there are upwards of 500.

She describes the art of dressing as "painting the body canvas", with vintage gowns, gloves, and handbags meticulously cared for (many wrapped in tissue paper and ribbon), and each labeled with the designer, year, and places she wore them. Being amongst her hat boxes is "like being amongst friends" as out of each open lid wafts memories of where she went, whom she met, and how she felt wearing them.
